New centre opens at Doreen

Families in Doreen are enjoying anew community and family centre built thanks to a unique partnership between Council, the State Government and the YMCA.

Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly joined Yan Yean MP Danielle Green and YMCA Whittlesea CEO Glynn Davies to open the Orchard Road Community and Early Learning Centre on Monday (Oct. 16).

The centre is an example of a new partnership model for the City of Whittlesea and Whittlesea YMCA, with the YMCA building the facility in exchange for a 25 year lease on the site.

Council also received a $1.6 million State Government Grant for the kindergarten, and $2.4 million in development contributions from surrounding estates, according to a media release.

Cr Kelly said the partnership approach allowed Council to deliver what the community needed while keeping costs more affordable.

“This is a truly innovative approach to delivering community facilities in the City of Whittlesea, and we hope to see more successful partnerships such as this in future.”

Cr Kelly said the new facility offered families three and four year old kindergarten, long day care, maternal and child health services and a community hall and kitchen available for meetings and activities.

“Doreen is one of our fastest growing suburbs, so it’s really important that we bring important services to our community’s doorstep.”

“This facility will make it easier for families to access the services they need, as well as providing a central point for the community to gather for activities and programs.”

“Local community groups are encouraged to use the new space for their meetings and events, and consulting rooms are available for local business owners, visiting service providers or other local social enterprises to use when visiting the area.”

Orchard Road Community and Early Learning Centre is located at 121 Orchard Rd,  Doreen.
