Craig Lloyd, Murrindindi CEO

Rates notices are on their way

Murrindindi Shire Council rates notices for the 2018/19 year are on their way.

Murrindindi Shire Council CEO Craig Lloyd said we know that rates’ time isn’t anyone’s favourite time of year, but it’s essential to keeping our Shire running and progressing.

“Rates represent only 3.5 percent of all the taxation money collected in Australia. We probably don’t think about the tax withheld by the Federal Government in our payslips each week, or the GST added to every purchase we make at a shop, in quite the same way. But councils really do provide a huge range of grassroots government services for the relatively small percentage of taxation they receive,” Mr Lloyd said.

“Council provides services that are intrinsic to our community, from road construction and maintenance through to community facilities, libraries, swimming pools, parks and gardens, aged care and disability services, children and family services, waste management services, town planning, environmental health, emergency services and community safety, economic development and tourism to communications and customer services.

“The income Murrindindi Shire Council gets from collecting rates makes up around 58 percent of Council’s total income and expenditure for the Shire. The rest comes from State and Federal grants and user fees collected from specific services, such as waste,” Mr Lloyd said.

“Be sure to check out the ‘Your Rates Explained’ brochure, which will come in the same envelope as your rates notice, for more information about how your rates are calculated and how Council allocated the rates resources last year. This brochure also has all the details on the rates payment options available. Whether you want to pay your rates in one go, set up a quarterly instalment schedule or organise fortnightly or monthly direct debits from your bank account, we have options to help make it as easy as possible for you.

“Plus, this year we’ve included a newsletter with the rates notices so you can catch up on the exciting programs Council has been working on in the last quarter,” Mr Lloyd added.
