A week after Molesworth residents were concerned about an allegedly illegal fireworks demonstration, St Andrews locals are worried about a display due to be held on Saturday, January 19.

“A number of concerned St Andrews residents have contacted (Nillumbik) Council about a private fireworks display planned to be held in Lake View Rd, St Andrews for Saturday, January 19,” says a statement released by the Nillumbik Shire late on Friday afternoon (Jan. 11).

“The CFA has granted permission for this to go ahead.

“Council does not have the power to approve or decline the fireworks.

“We have spoken to the event organiser to convey community concerns.

“We empathise as we appreciate that this can be a highly stressful experience, including for those with livestock and pets.

“We have commenced the process of changing our local laws – which must follow state laws – to enable us to introduce controls to better regulate fireworks on private land,” Nillumbik Council says.
