‘This Girl Can’: Cr Bisset

As part of the State Government’s ‘This Girl Can’ initiative, Murrindindi Shire Council has been working with local sport and recreation organisations to roll out a program of activities that encourage women and girls to get active.
Youth, Recreation and Community Planning Portfolio Councillor, Charlie Bisset said Council was pleased to receive $12,000 funding from VicHealth to deliver activities.
“The campaign’s promotion features real women instead of professional athletes or airbrushed models. It’s about empowering women to feel comfortable being active in public spaces,” Cr Bisset said.
“So far, more than 50 women have either registered or attended a ‘This Girl Can’ event around Murrindindi Shire.
“The first was held at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort in April. This event involved a guided five-kilometre walk, morning tea, lunch and a go on the flying fox.
“It was encouraging to see some women taking part with their babies and children as well. A big thank you to Lake Mountain for facilitating an excellent event.
“The Outdoor Education Foundation – a new, charitable branch of the Outdoor Education Group – also partnered with Murrindindi Shire Council to offer a ‘This Girl Can’ event to the women of Murrindindi Shire.
“The event was a bike-ride along the Great Victorian Rail Trail on April 27. As well as being a lovely day of cycling, participants were treated to a how-to bike maintenance session, where they learned to change a tyre, fix a puncture and undertake other simple bike repairs.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the other local clubs and businesses that have supported ‘This Girl Can’ in Murrindindi Shire: Alexandra Lawn Tennis Club, Yea Bowls Club, MKYoga and Massage in Marysville, Let’s Zumba with Kazza and Yoga @ Alex.
“There’s still lots to come, on the ‘This Girl Can’ calendar, with the initiative running until the end of May. Be sure to check out Council’s Facebook page or www.thisgirlcan.com.au to see what’s coming up,” Cr Bisset said.
VicHealth Acting CEO Dr Lyn Roberts said we want all women – no matter how sweaty they get, how red their face is or how good they are – to feel comfortable about getting out there and giving physical activity a go. “That’s what ‘This Girl Can’ – Victoria is all about.”
