DAREBIN: Laneway to honour Greeks

Kalamata Place is to be the name of the laneway between Gooch St and Raleigh St, Thornbury.

Darebin Council made a resolution to name the unnamed laneway at the rear of 680 to 700 High St and adjoining 2 Gooch St and 1 Raleigh St, Thornbury as ‘Kalamata Place’.

This name is in recognition of the many thousands of Greek migrants who settled in the Thornbury area in the 1950s and onwards from towns in the vicinity of Kalamata, Greece.

The Council will now make application to the Registrar of Geographic Names to have the name officially registered. It is anticipated that this will take between two to four months.

“We would like to thank all of the members of the Darebin community who made submissions with respect to the naming of this laneway,” said a Council representative.
