WHITTLESEA: Mayor stands for Werribee by-election

Whittlesea Mayor Cr Aidan McLindon is standing as a right-wing independent in the Werribee state by-election being held on Saturday, February 8.

Pundits say that Cr McLindon will seek to direct preferences to Liberal candidate Steve Murphy, who is contesting the by-election against Labor candidate John Lister.

The by-election has been caused by the resignation of former State Treasurer Tim Pallas.

Cr McLindon is reported to have said that he will not stand down as Whittlesea Mayor while the by-election is in progress.

The Age newspaper quotes Labor-alinged Whittlesea Councillor, Lawrie Cox, to be “gobsmacked” by Cr McLindon’s candidature.
