BAYSIDE: Manjula is Victorian Senior of the Year
Bayside resident Professor Manjula Datta O’Connor has been awarded the Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year for her efforts in preventing family violence.
In 2012, Prof. O’Connor co-founded the AustralAsian Centre for Human Rights and Health. She had previously spent years teaching and researching family violence in India and worked as a psychiatrist for 25 years.
Her steadfast commitment, deep insights, and passion led her to spearhead research projects and community events that raised awareness about dowry abuse in Australia.
Her work helped to trigger a Federal Senate committee inquiry into dowry abuse in Australia and recent amendments to the Federal Family Law Amendment Act 2023 now include dowry abuse as economical abuse.
“I started the campaign to change the legislation of Victoria to include the dowry abuse in the Family Violence Protection Act in 2019. Victoria became the first state to enact that legislation,” Prof. O’Connor said.
Prof. O’Connor does exceptional work with victim-survivors and advocates
