SPORT: Alexandra retains Hedger-Ivey Cup
On Saturday (Aug. 9), the Alexandra teams travelled to Yea to take on the Tigers on their home turf, with both clubs competing for the prestigious Hedger/Ivey Cup.
Each year, this special event sees Alexandra and Yea battle it out for the honour of taking home the Cup, named in tribute to two club legends — Alexandra’s Kevin Hedger and Yea’s Richard Ivey. Both men were true stalwarts of their respective clubs, and it remains a great honour to continue this meaningful tradition in their memory.
With a clean sweep in both football and netball at Yea, the Rebels once again claimed bragging rights, proudly retaining the Hedger/Ivey Cup for another year.
Reserves
Alexandra –12-7-79 defeated Yea 5-5-35
The Reserves headed to Yea on Saturday determined to bring home a win, knowing victory would strengthen their position on the ladder and give them a shot at a double chance heading into finals.
With the match starting later in the day, both sides came out evenly matched in the opening term. At quarter time, the Rebels held a slender lead of just one goal.
The momentum began to shift in the second quarter, with the Rebels lifting their intensity and beginning to find their rhythm. By half-time, they had extended their lead to 18 points.
The second half saw the boys take full control of the game, dominating possession and capitalising on scoring opportunities. They booted 6 goals 5 to Yea’s 2 goals 3, pulling away to secure a convincing 44-point win over the Tigers.
It was a strong performance at a crucial time in the season, giving the Rebels a boost in confidence and ladder position as finals approach.

Seniors
Alexandra – 9-2-56 defeated Yea 7-12-54
The Seniors took to the field at 4pm for a twilight clash against Yea, with both teams hungry for a win. For the Rebels, the stakes were high—securing the four points was crucial to locking in a finals berth.
Alexandra started strongly, asserting early control with four goals to Yea’s one, giving them a 17-point lead at quarter time. The Tigers responded in the second quarter, lifting their work rate and matching the Rebels across the ground. They kicked 3.5 to Alexandra’s 3.1, trimming the margin to just 13 points at the main break.
Both sides came out with renewed energy after half-time, but strong defensive efforts kept scoring to a minimum. Each team managed just one goal for the quarter.
Injuries began to take a toll on the Rebels. Sam Turner was ruled out for the second half, while promising young talent Riley Frankcombe battled through with a back issue, clearly restricted in his usual impact.
With the final quarter played under lights, the tension rose. Yea surged late, adding 2.4 to Alexandra’s single goal, bringing the margin within a kick. In a tense finish, the Rebels held on to claim a heart-stopping two-point victory.
Standout players included Tom Boots, who was once again outstanding in defence, along with fellow backmen Nathan Georgiadis and Nick Meehan, who both provided composure and strength under pressure. Up forward, Ted Watkin was a key target, presenting well and giving the team a strong focal point in attack.
It wasn’t the Rebels’ cleanest win, but with finals on the line, the four points were all that mattered.

This week the Senior teams will travel to Belgrave, with our Under 17 netballers playing Pakenham Maroon at Seville.
Dinners will continue on Thursday night with Build your own burgers and happy hour and the club members draw.
Junior Matches at Rebel Park
The majority of our Junior teams were at home this weekend with Un9, 10 & 12 Football & 11, 13, 15 & Under Alex Red playing against Yea in the football and four games of netball, while our 15 & Under Black Netball teams took on Seymour and the Under 16 Boys played against Mooroopna. Our Under 14 Footballers travelled to Wandong to take on the Raiders at their home turf.
