NORTH-EAST: Most dangerous roundabout
Banyule and Nillumbik Councils are calling for urgent action to improve safety at the Civic Drive Roundabout in Greensborough, following its ranking as the most dangerous intersection by the RACV.
The RACV survey, which received over 12,000 responses, identified the Civic Drive Roundabout (also known as Greensborough Bypass / Diamond Creek Road Roundabout) as a high-risk site due to its complex design, steep gradient, large traffic volumes, multiple lanes and unsafe driver behaviour.
The National Transport Research Organisation and the Australian Road Research Board have also recommended a full redesign to address safety and congestion concerns.
“No matter what side of the roundabout you approach from, it’s pretty hectic,” said Deputy Banyule Mayor, Cr Peter Castaldo.
“Whether you’re trying walk, cycle or drive around it, getting to school, a playground, or a local service, we want our communities to arrive safely. It’s a major community safety concern.”
The roundabout currently handles more than 25,000 vehicles per day and is expected to see a 30 per cent increase in traffic once the North East Link opens in 2028.
Local residents have described the roundabout as “the roundabout of death” and “the worst intersection they’ve ever had to navigate”. The Councils are jointly advocating for a $300,000 feasibility study.
