Lovers of the Liza Minelli film Cabaret will remember the chaos and debauchery of the cabaret clubs of the Weimar era in Germany, between the two world wars.
Cabaret clubs were huge in this era, as people flocked to their particular brand of raunchy humour and music.
Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett continues the Weimar tradition in Melbourne, as it takes over North Melbourne’s Meat Market arts centre this week.
Acclaimed as a superb vocalist, Bernie promises an evening of unfiltered, debauched chaos, with her powerful original songs and some show stopping anthems, as she is accompanied by her live ‘haus band’.
Last year’s Club Kabarett season collected three Green Room award nominations and was warmly received by audiences.
Bernie is delighted to be back in Melbourne, a place which sees itself as a cabaret capital of Australia.
“This show encapsulates all that is truly wonderful about Melbourne in so many ways, including the ability to throw a bloody good party,” Bernie enthuses.
“I was overwhelmed by the response to our show last year, so we are looking forward to bringing it back for even longer this time.”
Club Kabarett features a wide range of cutting-edge performers, including contortionist Soliana Ersie, sword swallower and fire breather Jacqueline Furey, drag cabaret artiste Iva Rosebud, aka Lachlan Bartlett, aerial trapeze performer Jarred Dewey, tap dancer Caleb Cameron and Tik Tok sensation Melissa Lee, whose recent performances were in London’s West End.
This is definitely an adults-only show that can truly claim it offers something for everyone who enjoys the variety of the cabaret from the Weimar era.
It runs from April 17 until May 24 and tickets can be bought at clubkararett.
