HOBSONS BAY: Erratic riding at Newport
Hobsons Bay Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested and charged two teenage boys after a Hyundai i30 was damaged by a group on motorcycles in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Police will allege the pair were riding in convoy with around 50 others in Fawkner about 4pm on Sunday, June 21.
It is understood the group then made their way to the Newport area where they were seen driving at speed, weaving through traffic and cutting off motorists.
Following a near miss with the Hyundai on Greive Pde, the driver of the vehicle came to a stop nearby on Melbourne Rd.
It is believed some of the riders then surrounded the vehicle, damaging the side windows and the windscreen.
The driver sustained minor injuries when the windscreen shattered.
Officers have been told some of the riders were armed with weapons during the incident. The riders fled the scene prior to police arrival.
Detectives executed search warrants at properties in Meadow Heights and in the Hume area on Tuesday night (June 23), when two males were arrested.
Investigators located and seized a number of items including alleged stolen registration plates, a stolen Yamaha motorcycle, various clothing items and a helmet.
An 18-year-old from Meadow Heights has been charged with:
• reckless conduct endangering serious injury
• affray
• drive in a manner dangerous
• unlicensed driving.
He was bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on December 11.
A 17-year-old boy from the Hume area has been charged with:
• reckless conduct endangering serious injury
• affray
• drive in a manner dangerous
• unlicensed driving.
He was bailed to appear before a children’s court at a later date.
Detectives continue to work to identify the other riders, with additional arrests expected to occur.
