OBSERVER: Briefs – The Works
The creatives behind Briefs: The Works nailed the title because it delivers exactly that – the works!
While the full-frontal nudity certainly commands attention, it’s far from the show’s defining feature. What truly sets this cabaret, burlesque, drag and circus spectacular apart is its extraordinary artistry, razor-sharp humour and jaw-dropping talent.
These drag performers don’t just lip-sync and strut across the stage. They produce flowers from improbable places, launch into splits and gravity-defying flips, and do it all in heels that seem to challenge both logic and physics.
Every act stretches the boundaries of skill, spectacle and showmanship, leaving the audience equally amazed and delighted.
As part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, the Spiegel Haus provides the perfect backdrop, with its vibrant carnival atmosphere amplified by dazzling sound and lighting that transforms the evening into a fully immersive experience.
Hosted by bearded drag queen Shivannah, the alter ego of Fez Faanana, Artistic Director and one of the creative forces behind Briefs Factory, the show blends seduction, comedy and breathtaking physicality. Expect soaring aerials, elegant acrobatics and plenty of unapologetic teasing.
Every performer deserves recognition, but several acts stood out. Dylan Rodriguez and Benjamin Butterly’s aerials were visually stunning, while Nastia showcased remarkable circus artistry. Rowan Thomas delivered one of the evening’s most memorable moments with a striptease performed on a Roue Cyr (acrobatic wheel), a combination you certainly don’t encounter every day.
The production also features rotating guest artists. On this particular night, audiences were treated to Diesel Darling’s breathtaking fire and sword swallowing, alongside a hilarious and highly skilled hoop performance by Amy Lee.
With almost 20 years of boundary-pushing performances behind them, the Briefs Factory are masters of their craft. Every act is delivered with infectious energy, impeccable timing and unmistakable flair, creating a bold, exhilarating spectacle that’s impossible to look away from and well worth experiencing for yourself.
