OBSERVER: Frozen

Babirra Music Theatre presents Disney’s Frozen the Broadway Musical until October 11 at The Round, Nunawading.
Theatrical artistry merges with state-of-the-art technology, achieving a visually spectacular interpretation.
Under the visionary direction of Joel Batalha, the creative team includes musical director Peter Verhagen, choreographer Kim Adam, US based set designer Eric Luchen, costume designer Leonie Campbell, co-lighting designers Jason Bovaird and Tristan Mildenhall, co-sound designers Marcello Lo Ricco and Patrick Edwards, and digital production/animation designer, Chris Anderson. Stage Manager is Katy Roose.
The audience is instantly transported to the magical Scandinavian kingdom of Arendelle to follow the adventures of royal princesses Anna and Elsa.
Elsa’s uncontrolled hidden ice powers cause adversity, but the sisters’ shared love eventually triumphs and summer returns to the kingdom.
The cast includes a strong, versatile ensemble, with the dancers executing Kim Adams’s fabulous choreography in polished style. I particularly loved the uplifting ‘summer’ tap.
Talented youth performers Anthea Ellis (Young Anna) and Khaleesi Martin (Young Elsa) are terrific in their roles, well-capturing their adult characters’ contrasting personalities.
Olivia Hanslow (Young Elsa) and Evie Alexander (Young Anna) alternate in these roles.
Using their first-class musical theatre skills to bring this fairytale alive are Elise Stevens (Queen Iduna), Jack Lear (King Agnaar), Josh Pratt (endearing Kristoff), William Murton (Weselton), Jet Spicer (Oaken), Lorraine Salvador (Bulda) and David Vien (Pabbie).
Darcy Harriss entertains as lovable snowman Olaf and hats off to Andy McDougall’s work as Kristoff’s pet reindeer Sven.
Mitch Sanfilippo (Hans) with his imposing princely storybook presence, skilfully transitions his character’s personality change.
Lead performers Marina Martin (Elsa) and Lisa Capon (Anna) are splendid in their roles. Marina’s elegant, poignant portrayal of Elsa evoked audience cheer at her freedom. Lisa’s cheerful, vivacious performance as Anna is a joy throughout.
Frozen features impressive vocals, harmonies and orchestral accompaniment.
The set design is superb, visually complemented by stunning lighting and immersive visual/sound effects, and beautiful costumes.
A memorable theatre experience. This show elevates community theatre to another level.
