OBSERVER: Newspaper Mama

A show that guarantees that adults and children will all enjoy it to the hilt is a precious experience to share.
And that’s where legendary children’s entertainer Peter Combe can help.
Peter has the secret to longevity as an entertainer, as he began entertaining kids with his catchy songs in the 1980s, and he continues to do so in 2026.
His show for the Melbourne Fringe Festival in October is called Peter Combe in Newspaper Mama … Every Day!
In it, Peter sings all his hits, including Newspaper Mama, Juicy Juicy Green Grass, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Jack and the Beanstalk, Tadpole Blues, Toffee Apple and Wash Your Face in Orange Juice, plus some quirky new material as well.
He aims to bring generations together as this concert is made for big kids and little kids alike.
Way back in 1977, Peter travelled to London, aiming to be the next Paul Simon, but he found that his teaching background and quirky sense of humous sent him in the direction of writing and performing for kids, a decision he has never regretted.
So what’s the secret to longevity in a business that is not known for its stability?
“Keep fit, respect your audience, maintain a sense of humour.I love what I do and want my songs to bring joy to people,” Peter says.
So for those who grew up with Peter Combe’s catchy songs (and once heard, rarely forgotten) grab the kids, make your newspaper hat and rock up to Newspaper Mama … Every Day!
There are two shows on Sunday October 18 at 11 am and 1 pm at the Spiegeltent, 17 Celestial Ave, Melbourne.
