OBSERVER:
Exit Theatre presents an English version of People, What Have You Done? on November 14 at the Richmond Rowing Club at 7.30pm and November 20, 21 and 27 at Chum Creek
After success of the Polish version staged two years ago for La Mama’s Mother Tongue Festival, Exit Theatre decided to produce its English version.
Written by Alek Silber and adapted and performed by Kristof Kaczmarek, the play reflects on the feelings of newcomers to Australia, telling of young Alek, who arrives in Australia in the early 60s – an exotic and distant country, where everything seems old-fashioned, culturally backward and unknown.
A young man, Alek, attempts to define himself in this unwanted new reality after being forced to leave his love, his friends, his beloved Warsaw, and the life he knew.
In this one-man show based on Silber’s memoirs, Kristof Kaczmarek will reflect and give a light-hearted account of the everyday reality of a migrant that shines a light on the hopes, failures and joys of building a new life, surrounded by strangers.
Can he cope with the alienation? Is he ever going to return? Is he ever going to call Australia his home?
