OBSERVER: Gasworks turns 40

Located at 21 Graham Street, Albert Park, Gasworks turns 40 in 2026, with a new vision as a home for creativity under new Creative Director and CEO Sam Strong.
Complete with park upgrade, a new brand and a renovated foyer, Gasworks will now be curated in quarterly instalments, with the first season of four shows for 2026, Summer@Gasworks, just launched.
Sam Strong has come from the role of Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre and directing critically acclaimed productions, to now championing independent artists at Gasworks in Albert Park.
One of his initiatives is Open Studio, where Gasworks gives its Studio Theatre to independent artists for free once a month.
2026 will also see a range of new partnerships, including one with Sorrento Writers Festival and Avenue Bookstore, adding literature and ideas to the Gasworks season. Sorrento Writers Festival Director Corrie Perkin will curate a series of events showcasing the finest writers and thinkers, kicking off in February with an Australian exclusive in conversation with Geoffrey Robertson on his new book World of War Crimes.
