MONASH: City acts on food firms
Moinash Council has acted on three former food business operators for unsafe practices.
Breaches included unregistered operations, poor cleanliness and inadequate handwashing facilities.
Penalties from the Magistrates Court ranged from $10,000 to more than $35,000 in fines and convictions.
Taste of Banaras Indian Restaurant in Clayton breached the Food Act 1984 and Food Standards Code in October last year for:
• Insufficient staff skills and knowledge
• Inadequate handwashing
• Poor cleanliness, storage and maintenance.
Director Praveen Jaiswar and the business were fined $6000, and ordered to pay $6,500 in costs. The restaurant has since closed.
KL Imports in Clayton breached the Food Act 1984 and Food Standards Code for handwashing practices in July last year. Follow-up inspections bythe Council team showed no required improvements.
Director Kapil Talwar was fined $1500 and ordered to pay $8798.38 in costs.
Thai Yim Restaurant in Mount Waverley breached the Food Act 1984 and Food Standards Code from May to November last year for:
• Operating without registration
• Obstructing handwashing facilities
• Poor cleanliness and improper food storage.
Director Francis Healy and the business were each fined $10,000 and told to jointly pay $15,803.50 in costs. The company and director were also convicted. The restaurant has since closed.
