NORTH-EAST: Bushfire relief payments
Indi MHR Helen Haines says that affected fire communities can now access bushfire relief payments through joint Federal and State Governments.
“These payments will provide immediate and practical relief to people impacted by these devastating fires,” Dr Haines said.
Under the arrangements, announced on Friday, one-off payments of $680 per adult and $340 per child are available, with a maximum payment of $2380 for eligible families.
Payments are made to help cover the costs of essentials like food, clothing, medication and accommodation.
Residents who had their homes damaged or destroyed by fires, or who live within an evacuation warning area are eligible.
Payments can be accessed at Emergency Relief Centres or by calling the VicEmergency hotline on 1800 226 226.
Emergency Recovery Victoria is working with local councils to assess recovery needs and coordinate further assistance.
“This is a deeply traumatic experience for our communities, who have faced devastating fires on Black Saturday and, more recently, during Black Summer,” Dr Haines said.
“Through it all, we are witnessing extraordinary bravery and community spirit.
“This is who we are – people stepping up and doing what we can for one another.
“I want to thank our emergency responders and the many locals who are doing everything possible to support each other and protect their communities,” Dr Haines said.
