YARRA RANGES: Flat rate parking idea for Warburton

Yarra Ranges Council last week heard a proposal that there be a flat rate parking rate of $3 per hour for Warburton motorists.
“In May 2024, Yarra Ranges Council resolved to implement the Paid Parking Pilot in Warburton, with the associated fees formally adopted in February 2025,” Councillors were told in a report.
“On Warburton Hwy, the approved fee structure provides the first hour free (with registration required) and $6 for the second hour.
“Trader feedback received in late December 2025 indicated that this model is confusing for visitors and may be leading to rushed visits and reduced browsing time in local shops and cafes. “Parking data supports this, showing 56% of visitors on Warburton Hwy stay approximately 45 minutes, suggesting the free-hour model may be influencing shorter stays.
“In February 2026, officers undertook targeted engagement with affected Warburton Hwy traders.
“The majority supported moving to a simplified flat rate of $3 per hour with no free period.
“This report recommends adjusting the Warburton Hwy fee structure accordingly to simplify the system, remove confusion, reduce perceived time pressure, and provide comparative data for the final pilot evaluation,” the report said.
