WEST: Police put brakes on hoons
Westgate Highway Patrol officers are cracking down on hoon drivers following a series of meets across the western suburbs.
Hundreds of owners of vehicles allegedly linked to recent hoon meets were to be targeted during an operation on Saturday (May 9).
The aim of the operation is to remove unauthorised drivers and unsafe vehicles from the roads.
An investigation has been underway after police responded to reports of about 200 vehicles gathering on Truganina last month.
The first incident took place on Permas Way just before midnight on April 17, and again on Felstead Drive at approximately 10pm on April 19.
On both occasions, the group of hundreds dispersed immediately once police arrived to the area.
It’s believed the group were performing burnouts – emitting sparks and smoke – with spectators lining the streets to watch.
Inspections
Footage from the police vehicle arriving to Felstead Drive at about 10pm on April 19 has been released, in the hopes that anyone who has information about the identity of those involved can come forward to police.
Over 150 owners of cars allegedly linked to these hoon meets have been instructed to present their vehicle for a roadworthy inspection under the Road Safety Act.
Drivers will be checked to ensure they are authorised drivers, while cars will be checked for any major defects including mechanical faults, engine modifications and tyre issues.
Owners who don’t present their vehicle may have their registration suspended.
If defect notices are issued, owners are required to have those repaired or replaced.
Unsafe drivers
Westgate Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Stephen O’Connell said: “We have a number of methods available to target hoons and remove unsafe drivers and vehicles from our roads.
“The margin for error at a hoon event is so small, let alone if dangerous burnouts and skids are being conducted in a car with defects.
“Our focus on stamping out these events will not stop – the minute you cross the line and engage in hoon activity, you won’t be able to hide from police.”
