MELBOURNE: Arson at Queen Vic Market
Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad are investigating a theft and arson on an ATM in Melbourne’s CBD early on Wednesday morning (May 13).
Three people gained access to an ATM using homemade explosives on Victoria St about 2.45am.
The homemade device ignited in the face of one of the men, leaving him with serious and life changing injuries.
It is believed the trio fled the scene on foot, before the injured man was located a short time later on Peel St.
He was conveyed to hospital to be treated for serious facial injuries where he was under police guard.
Detective Inspector Chris Murray, Arson and Explosives Squad, said: “This was a targeted and opportunistic attack on an ATM which has left one man with life changing injuries.
“I have said it before and I will say it again: fire and incendiary devices are volatile, unpredictable and incredibly dangerous in untrained hands.
“Two other men present at the scene fled, leaving their associate severely injured. It is only a matter of time until you are identified and arrested – I would appeal to you to visit your nearest police station and hand yourselves in before then.”
