Countdown to Yea-Kinglake grudge match

The countdown is on to the Yea-Kinglake grudge match at Yea Recreation Reserve on Saturday, May 26.

More than 200 Yea supporters are expected at the ground for a reunion of past premiership players.

The grudge dates back to 1990 when the Kinglake team re-formed after a 10-year absence. A pre-season practice match at Yea saw player Alan Cassell hospitalised, after being kicked in the head.

Yea convincingly won the 1990 match. The Tigers went on to compete that year in the Kyabram District Football League; Kinglake played in Division 2 of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League.

In 2018, the May 12 round includes the Division 2 matches between Thornton-Eildon and Powelltown, Kinglake v Yarra Junction, Yarra Glen v Gembrook-Cockatoo, and Yea v Seville. Alexandra has the bye.

There are no local matches on May 19 because of an inter-league match between AFL Yarra Ranges and the SEFNL at Beaconsfield.

Our reporter was at the 1990 grudge match, and a special photo-feature will be published inĀ The Local Paper in our next issue (Wed., May 16). The feature looks at the re-formation of the Lakers side, and our reports from 28 years ago, including the first team list and guernsey presentation.
