OBSERVER: Golden Boys
Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor leads the cast in Golden Boy, a searing revival of Clifford Odets’ knockout American classic.
Set in 1930s New York at the height of the Great Depression, gifted young violinist Joe Bonaparte is lured by the promise of fame and fortune into the brutal world of professional boxing.
As his ambitions grow, he must confront what he’s willing to sacrifice, who he’s willing to become, and how to find his place in a world that demands he choose a side.
Olivier Award-winner Sam Yates (Vanya) directs this drama exploring ambition, identity and the high price of success, brought to life with a live string quartet.
The production is Josh O’Connor’s first stage role since he played Romeo in the National Theatre’s filmed Romeo and Juliet in 2021, and he stars alongside Hayley Squires and Daniel Mays.
Filmed live at the Almeida Theatre in London to sold-out audiences, Golden Boy will screen in Australian cinemas from November 19.
Tickets are on sale now. Distributed by Sharmill Films.
