STATEWIDE: Rugby World Cup final lost to Sydney

Victoria’s reputation as the events capital of the nation has been further harmed as reports indicate Sydney is set to secure hosting rights for the 2027 Rugby World Cup final, according to Deputy Liberal Party Leader Sam Groth.

The Rugby World Cup is the third-largest sporting event in the world, and hosting the final brings enormous economic benefits while showcasing the host city and state on the global stage, Mr Groth said.

“The failure to secure this significant major event follows reports the Allan Labor Government wasplaying games with its bid to host the event in May 2024,” Mr Groth said.

“How can Victoria be the sporting capital of the nation if we are missing out on the biggest events?

“The Allan Labor Government was never serious about securing this event and now the economic, social and reputational benefits will be enjoyed by Sydney instead of Melbourne.

“Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage major events and Victorians are paying the price.”
