BOROONDARA: Advocacy resulted in 224 units – Franco
Boroondara Council says that it has advocated for an increased number of social and public housing on Homes Victoria sites proposed for renewal.
In answer to a question from resident Julie Mulhauser, Deputy Mayor Cr Victor Franco said that this includes Markham Estate in Ashburton and Bills St in Hawthorn.
“In both these cases, Council advocated for a significant increase in the number of additional housing units from the proposed 10 per cent uplift,” Cr Franco said.
“Council’s advocacy at Ashburton resulted in 111 units of public housing compared to the initially planned 62 units.
“With Bills Street, Council’s advocacy resulted in 103 units of social housing, an increase on the initially proposed 59 units.
“In addition, Council’s advocacy has included a submission to the enquiry into the public housing renewal program. A 2020 motion to the Local Government Associations National Assembly which called for the Federal Government to increase unding to the state for the adequate provision of public and social housing.
“A submission to the Victorian enquiry into homelessness, a submission into the national enquiry into homelessness, and a joint submission into the enquiry into homelessness in Victoria from Boroondara, Manningham housing and homelessness network. Council also regularly contacts Homes Victoria with concerns about the condition of public housing when raised by residents,” Cr Franco said.
