MELBOURNEWIDE: Offender targets copper at rail stations
Transit Divisional Response Unit police are investigating a number of copper thefts throughout the railway network across Melbourne.
Since the beginning of this year, the offender has stolen copper cables at a number of locations on the Mernda and Hurstbridge lines.
On March 14 a male arrived at Bell Railway Station in a silver VW hatchback just after 1pm
The man enters the nearby substation, removes large spools of copper cabling and places them in the boot of the car before driving away.
Each incident has caused significant damage, and the cost of the thefts is estimated to exceed $100,000.
The offender is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged in his mid-30s and has a solid build.
Investigators have released CCTV and an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquires.
