FIRST: New teams for Div. 2
Tuesday, September 17, 2019
Gembrook-Cockatoo and Seville are leaving the AFL Outer East Division 2 football and netball competitions.
The Brookers and Blues will enter the Division One competition, Yea Football-Netball Club President Brad Watts has confirmed.
Seville won the Seniors football premiership against Yarra Junction on Saturday (Sept. 14) at Yarra Glen. The Blues lost to the Eagles in the Reserves.
Seville played in each of the four netball Grand Final matches last weekend.
The departure of Gem-brook-Cockatoo and Seville sides will change the complexion of the Division 2 competition in 2020.
Two sides – Warburton-Millgrove and Broadford – will join Division 2.
The Burras were formed in 1967 after a merger of the Warburton and Millgrove teams.
Warburton-Millgrove finished bottom of the AFL Outer East Division 1 ladder in 2019.
Broadford comes to the AFL Outer East Division 2 competition from the Riddell District Football League (2009-present, and 1977-1984).
Broadford has been known as the Roos, and worn the blue and white. This will be in direct conflict with existing Division 2 team, Thornton-Eildon.
Broadford previously competed with local teams in the Waranga North East competition in 1921-38 and 1947-76. It has also been in the Heath-cote, Hume Highway, Mernda and North-East competitions.
Brad Watts said the Division 2 changes were advised to club officials at an AFL Outer East meeting held this month.
In 2004, Broadford was warned by the VCFL to clean up its act after 10 players had fronted the Tribunal.
