BANYULE: Viewbank concerns as Mokbel out on bail

Viewbank residents say they have safety concerns after crime figure Tony Mokbel (pictured at left) was released last Friday (Apr. 4) to live at the local four-bedroom residence of his sister, Gawy Saad.
Supreme Court of Appeal Judges Emerton, Osborn and Dixon ordered Mr Mokbel’s release on strict conditions, including that he report daily to the Heidelnerg Police Station.
Local residents went on TV to say they have worries that criminal elements might compromise local street safety in attempts to contact or attack Mr Mokbel.
The Court ordered that media not identify the exact location of the Saad property.
Mr Mokbel’s legal representatives submited that the risk of breach of bail is reduced by:
n his ties to the jurisdiction, supportive family and stable address;
n the imposition of a condition requiring electronic monitoring by way of a GPS device supplied by the company Allied Universal; and
n the requirement of a bail guarantee in the amount of $850,000 secured against a residential property in Yallambie and a bank cheque.
Ms Saad runs a cafe. The name of the business was redacted in Court documents.
Ms Saad confirmed that she and her husband have clear title over the Yallambie property and that it is valued at $750,000 and the property could be made available as a bail guarantee along with a bank cheque for $100,000.
