Air quality deteriorates at Mansfield
Monday, January 6, 2020
Air quality around Mansfield has deteriorated over the past few days, says a statement by the Mansfield District Hospital.
“We have received a limited supply of P2 masks. When worn correctly disposable P2 face masks are able to filter out very fine particles from the air,” a Hospital statement said on Monday (Jan. 6).
“They help reduce exposure to bushfire smoke / poor air quality and associated health effects.
“Those most at risk of significant health effects of smoke include:
• People over 65 years of age
• Children 14 years or younger (children may find it difficult or impractical to wear a face mask correctly so should instead reduce exposure to the smoke and ash).
• Pregnant women
• People with existing heart or lung conditions, including asthma (these people should seek medical advice before using a face mask).
“It is better to stay indoors, away from the smoke. If you cannot avoid going outdoors and choose to wear a face mask to reduce inhalation of particles and gases in the air, it’s important to understand their benefits and limitations.
“Free P2 masks are available from MDH Reception between the hours of 8.30am-5pm Monday-Friday. After hours, by urgent need only.
“Due to our limited supply we are limiting the distribution to six masks per person on each occasion. You will be provided with an information sheet detailing how to to correctly wear the mask.
“The best option is to stay indoors,” the Hospital spokesman said.
