MURRINDINDI: Critical injuries: Thornton crash

Kinglake police are investigating after they found a man with critical injures in a car crashed into a tree in Thornton this morning (Thurs.).

The officers were out on patrol when they caught a glimpse of what they believed to be a dumped car just off Taggerty-Thornton Rd, about 3km from the Goulburn Valley Hwy about 1.45am.

When they went to investigate, they found a critically injured man in the car and rendered first aid.

In another stroke of luck an ambulance, who was transporting another patient nearby, was also able to respond providing immediate assistance.

It is believed the crash, which was in the middle of nowhere, occurred not long before police arrived.

The 37-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Benalla Sgt Gavin Duncan said if it wasn’t for the members, they may have come across a very different outcome today.

“It was two degrees out there this morning and there is no doubt that the man, even though he is extremely unwell and fighting for his life, has been given a chance,” Sgt Duncan said.

“It really is so lucky that they have seen the car out of the corner of their eye and then to have an ambulance also available in close proximity has given this man a fighting chance.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have information about the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
