WHITTLESEA: Mernda bakery worker tests positive

The Herald Sun reports that a Bakers Delight worker at Mernda has tested positive to Coronavirus.

“A photo shared on social media allegedly showing a group of coronavirus cleaners wearing full personal protection equipment eating after they’d cleaned a Mernda bakery has sparked debate online.

“This comes as Bakers Delight confirmed on its Facebook page a Mernda team member tested positive to the deadly virus and informed the business on Monday.

“The photo – shared in several northern suburbs’ Facebook groups by a member of the public – has the message written on it: “Bakers Delight Mernda coronavirus cleaners using their phones and eating with the same gloves used to clean the bakery”.

“It’s not clear in the photo if any of the workers are eating, although one man appears to be on the phone.

“The photo has attracted hundreds of comments online with some labelling the actions of the workers “so bad” but others believing it was not a big deal, and asking how the person who posted the photo knew the workers hadn’t changed their gloves before sitting down.

The photo has sparked debate online.

“In a Facebook post on Tuesday Bakers Delight Mernda confirmed it had been informed on Monday that a team member at its Mernda bakery had tested positive to COVID-19.

“The team member last worked on Tuesday, 4 August and the bakery was closed as soon as we were notified of the test results,” the post said.

“Both the team member and those who have recently worked with them are now in isolation.

“We already have very high cleaning and hygiene processes in place but as an extra precaution, the bakery will undergo a professional deep clean today (Tuesday).

“As always, the safety of our customers, team members and wider community is our priority and we are taking advice from the Department Health and Human Services to ensure we can safely reopen soon.”

“In a comment to a customer the store said it had contracted an external company to do the clean and all staff were doing well with no other symptoms at this stage.

“Negative test results have also started coming in which is great. We just want to make sure we do everything in our power to keep staff and the community safe,” the post said.

“Bakers Delight did not wish to comment further.

“The Department of Health and Human Services has been contacted for comment.”
