8.30pm Sunday. Maroondah Hwy traffic is getting through after a tree came down between Fernshaw and Black’s Spur. SES have been called. Cars are getting through with some care. The scene is located above Gate 4 water tank.

The fire, 5kms west of Hazeldene at Flowerdale, has been described as ‘safe’. Eight vehicles have been responding to a 0.1-hectare fire in heavily timbered country, Emergency Victoria advises. The sounds and smells of fire – sirens, aircraft, smoke – have been an uncomfortable reminder for many locals on this first Saturday in February.

Building fire at Mernda
