Police are investigating after a suspicious fire at a synagogue in East Melbourne on Friday night (July 4).
It is understood that an unknown man entered the grounds of the synagogue about 8pm.
The offender has poured a flammable liquid on the front door of the building and set it on fire before fleeing the scene on foot in a westerly direction along Albert St.
There were approximately 20 people inside the synagogue at the time of the incident.
Everyone inside self-evacuated through the rear of the building and there have been no reports of injuries.
Firefighters attended and extinguished the fire which was contained to the front entrance.
Police are engaging with people from the synagogue and other representatives from the Jewish community to ensure appropriate supports are in place.
Police are still working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fire including the motivation behind the incident.
\u201cThere is absolutely no place in our society for antisemitic or hate-based behaviour,\u201d said a Victoria Police representative.
Investigations remain ongoing.
An arson chemist were to attend the scene and police are canvassing for CCTV footage.
