{"id":13765,"date":"2025-10-08T05:20:37","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:20:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dindi.com.au\/wp\/?p=13765"},"modified":"2025-10-08T05:20:38","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T18:20:38","slug":"mornington-peninsula-1-contamination-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dindi.com.au\/wp\/2025\/10\/08\/mornington-peninsula-1-contamination-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"MORNINGTON PENINSULA: $1 contamination problem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mornington Peninsula Shire has a $1 million contamination problem &#8211; which it believes could be eliminated by changed behaviours.<br>Contamination refers to non-recyclable items such as food scraps, liquids, textiles and batteries being placed in the recycling bin.<br>The Shire says that it is forking out an extra $1 million to process household recycling following a rise in contamination.<br>\u201cInstead of paying the additional cost for our contractors to dispose of contaminated material, we would prefer to see that money go towards upgrades to infrastructure that benefit our community,\u201d said a Council representative.<br>\u201cWe know our community doesn&#8217;t want to waste ratepayer funds either. The good news is &#8211; we can turn this around together.<br>\u201cContamination is measured by weight, which means even small mistakes can add up.<br>\u201cOne of the most effective ways to reduce contamination is to ensure containers are empty before they are placed in the bin. A quick empty and rinse can make all the difference.\u201d<br>Kerbside recycling bins can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Empty containers from the kitchen and laundry (rinse if needed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paper and cardboard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep everything loose \u2013 not in bags.<br>\u201dTo help everyone recycle right, we\u2019re launching a new community education campaign called \u2018Bin it right, future\u2019s bright\u2019. \u201cThrough this initiative, we\u2019ll be sharing simple tips so everyone has the information they need to make recycling easier and more effective.<br>\u201cPeriodically throughout the year, our waste contractor undertakes bin inspections. Unlike nosey bin chickens, our inspectors don\u2019t dig around in the bins \u2013 that&#8217;s potentially dangerous.
