MORNINGTON PENINSULA: Board of Inqury over McCrae landslide

A Board of Inquiry is to be held into the McCrae landslide, and its handling by the Mornington Peninsula Shire, says Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan.
Ms Allan says her Government wants to get to the bottom of what happened and to prevent similar incidences occurring in the future.
Ms Allan Allan and Local Government Minister Nick Staikos announced the Board of Inquiry into the cause of the landslide, after whichmultiple homes were evacuated and a council worker was hospitalised after a house slid down a hill and collided with other homes.
The Board of Inquiry will be asked to determine the cause of the landslide, what happened and whether it could have been avoided.
It will also determine the adequacy of preventative measures taken to mitigate the risks following other landslides in McCrae.
The Inquiry’s findings and recommendations will identify any measures deemed necessary to prevent or mitigate risk of similar events occurring in the future across Victoria.
Once established, the Inquiry will develop a process for locals to engage with its work, with details on how people can submit their stories to be released in the coming weeks.
The Inquiry will be asked to deliver its final report later this year, including recommendations to Government.
“We need to get to the bottom of what has happened here because too many people have been let down and too many questions remain unansweredm” Ms Allan said.
Mr Staikos said: “An independent Inquiry will ensure local residents’ voices are heard and help us do everything we can to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
Vicki Ward, Minister for Emergency Services, said: “We thank our dedicated emergency services for their response efforts and supporting those impacted. This is a challenging time for these residents – we know this next step will help to deliver the answers they need.”
Eastern Victoria MLC Tom McIntosh said: “We’ll continue working with evacuated residents to make sure they are supported and back into their homes as soon as possible.”
