OBSERVER: The World Approaches

Monash Uni Student Theatre’s (MUST) thought-provoking play The World Approaches has a climate-change theme with a difference
Written by Luca Edwards, The World Approaches cleverly presents two perspectives for audiences to consider, giving voice to both the animal world and humanity. Predominantly a comedy, the play is also aptly described in the programme as a ‘Fusion of satire, tragedy, and poignant poetry.’
Co-directed by Sam Pringle, the play tells of hapless solo adventurer Aidan (Bridget Hyde) lost in the Sumatran Rainforest and encountering four animal inhabitants.
They now have the power to decide his survival – Orangutan (Sebastian Wood), Viper (Remi Petterlin), Cochoa (Eloise Vernon) and Gibbon (Caitlyn Crawford). The tables are turned between humanity and nature.
Adding contrast, citified Joshua Oliver (Poet One) and Sara Chavan (Poet Two) with their well-presented poetic commentary, at times represent a Greek Chorus.
Parrot (personable Thomas Noulikas Galinas) adds sparkle and colourful dimension to the cast, interacting in fun style with the audience
Penny McNeill’s simple stylised set with huge rope-like tree, was most effective for visually transporting us into the rainforest setting and for the sad finality.
Bravo to the cast, who presented polished performances under the fine co-direction of Sam Pringle and Luca Edwards. The future of live performance is assured if these talented students continue with their craft. A particular mention for Bridget Hyde who excelled as Aidan.
From a critical perspective, I thought Parrot’s character needed earlier identification/introduction, and similarly, with the animals wearing stylized costumes, earlier identification of their characters in the dialogue would be helpful for the audience.
It was disappointing to hear such a creative, well-written script spoiled by frequent overuse of the ‘F’ word.
A powerful word if used sparingly and appropriately, but in this case its overuse jarred and detracted from the narrative’s message. This poetic script deserves better.
Overall,The World Approaches was enjoyable and insightful, effectively raising awareness of our relationship with nature. Congratulations to all.
