MORNINGTON PENINSULA: No cash at Rye tip

Rye resident ‘Simon’ asked a question at Mornington Peninsula Shire Council as to why residents cannot use cash at the Rye tip?
“During COVID, cash was no longer accepted at the sites to reduce transmission risks between gatehouse staff and customers, ensuring continued service,” a Council representative replied
“This also minimised theft, hold-ups, or break-ins due to large cash amounts at isolated locations with independent staff.
“Additionally, there were operational efficiencies for both the community and gatehouse staff:
n Faster transactions reduced delays and improved the overall experience, especially during peak periods, with less customer frustration.
n Staff no longer had to manage cash, increasing efficiency.
“Given these safety and operational benefits, the decision was made to remain cash-free, as eftpos/credit card payment issues have been rare,” the Council representative said of the unilateral decision.
